Rumours

Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson | Canada | 2024 | 103m

In-person Q&A with Director Guy Maddin and Anthony Kinik

Rumours, the latest collaboration between Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, is a surreal tale in which leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies gather at the G7 summit to draft a response to a global crisis. As night falls in the misty woods, they become isolated and face increasingly bizarre challenges, revealing their incompetence and unraveling their carefully crafted facade.

Guy Maddin is one of Canada’s most acclaimed filmmakers, directing thirteen feature-length films, including Rumours (2024) with Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander, as well as The Forbidden Room (2015), My Winnipeg (2007), and The Saddest Music in the World (2003). His films Archangel (1990) and The Heart of the World (2000) won National Society of Film Critics Awards for Best Experimental Film. Evan and Galen Johnson, filmmakers from Winnipeg, are known for their frequent collaborations with Maddin.

This film contains mature content that may be inappropriate for younger audiences. Parental discretion is advised.

Additional screenings of Guy Maddin’s works in MNFF The Winnipeg Connection series: Maddin’s first feature, Tales From The Gimli Hospital. The Green Fog (2017) by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, is on display at the Niagara Artists Centre Microcinema during gallery hours Wed 13 – Sun 17 Nov 2024. mnff.nac.org
