Green Fog
Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson | Canada, USA | 2017 | 65m
Part of The Winnipeg Connection MNFF 2024 series
The Green Fog is a cinematic exploration that reimagines Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Vertigo. The film is composed of a collage of over 100 archival clips that feature various scenes of San Francisco, creatively intertwined to capture the essence of Hitchcock’s original narrative while introducing a new perspective. How to pay homage to a masterpiece without using its footage; how to do it simply by gathering images from various sources, all of them haunted by the curse of a mysterious green fog that seems to cause irrepressible vertigo…
This experimental work blends familiar images and sounds, evoking the themes of obsession, memory, and the uncanny inherent in Hitchcock’s film, ultimately crafting a unique homage to a cinematic classic.
Guy Maddin is one of Canada’s most celebrated filmmakers, known for his unique, surreal style. Since his debut in 1985, he has directed thirteen feature films, including The Saddest Music in the World (2003), My Winnipeg (2007), and his latest, Rumours (2024). His experimental work has earned critical acclaim, with Archangel (1990) and The Heart of the World (2000) winning National Society of Film Critics Awards for Best Experimental Film.
Evan and Galen Johnson are Winnipeg-based filmmakers who frequently collaborate with Guy Maddin. Their joint projects include the short films Bring Me the Head of Tim Horton (2015), Seances (2016), and Stump the Guesser (2020), as well as the recent feature Rumours (2024).
